doing what mzungus do best
This week was filled with doing what mzungus do best, meeting other mzungus and, with these other mzungus, eating anything but the local food. Tuesday, Casey and I played Ultimate Frisbee with 15 other American guys (plus Ellie, one german, one dutch, one Ugandan and one japanese). It was a serious workout and I am still aching. Imagine me, running around like a mad-woman with 12 guys throwing a plastic, high-speed disc and yelling American Football terms that I have no idea the meaning of. “ZONE COVERAGE!” “PUMP FAKE!” “AUDIBLE”…. please, use English. Anyway, I almost caught the frisbee twice… It’s been years since I’ve played any sort of team sport… and I’ve never played with such large, intense men. I’ll be better next week.
Besides the outreach on Thursday, this week I haven’t been very productive at TASO. Most days have been spent hanging out in the pharmacy or aimlessly surfing the internet. Lately my energy has been spent eating out at non-Ugandan restaurants. Tuesday was Indian, Wednesday was Ethiopian with the new TEACH guys and Thursday was dinner at a USAID worker’s mansion for a goodbye party for a mutual friend. Tonight I plan on eating a cucumber and a pepper. Perhaps a hard boiled egg as well.
The USAID employee’s house was incredible for Ugandan standards…with beautifully handcrafted furniture, a transparent, glass sink, a FULL sized oven and stove… it was surreal. Needless to say, I fully enjoyed where the American tax-payer’s dollar goes.
Casey and I are now sitting in the resource room at work. I’ll be productive today and play in the children’s centre. I am also craving a chapati.
Until next time,
Sarah
