wandering.
There is a cat stealthy walking along the railing of the building across from the coffee shop. Stella would not do well here. She is obese compared to the skin and bones here. Stella is my cat, just to be clear, and far from as agile as the matted, skinny ones I’ve seen around Gulu. Obesity is a product of her cushy, pampered life back home. She never has to pick through garbage as the cats here probably do, though she probably does anyway. I feel almost sorry for the cats here… especially during the nights where cries outside the window keep me up half the night. Alas, perhaps I’ll take in a stray kitten or two. For the past few days I’ve been feeling quite under the weather, until yesterday when I felt well enough to emerge from our room and wander around again. Casey and I looked for the market and ended up on a street surrounded on both sides with school children yelling “MZUNGU, MZUNGU!” and then laughing uncontrollably. The younger children would shyly look our way and wave. I prefer younger children. Casey and I were unsuccessful at finding the market but we found an interesting restaurant where we later went for dinner. I had delicious chicken stew and sweet potatoes. The chicken stew consists of a full chicken shoulder immersed in a broth locally spiced. Casey had the goat stew with rice. Deciding against going out we went back to the complex and watched Dexter until we were both too tired to keep our eyes open. Only two more days until our placement. It’s been nice to have this time to explore the city, but I tend to be happiest when something is required of me, when I have some sort of responsibility to attend to. So, here’s to the weekend before the real work begins! -Sarah
