Freelancing in Uganda

Casey and Sarah's life and travels in the heart of Africa.

life.

Tomorrow we head to a few NGOs and see about volunteering. Fingers crossed we’ll have something to do by the end of the week.

We’ve only been in Gulu for less than three full days, but we are slowly settling in to our new life and routine. Power outages are frequent and our compound’s generator isn’t always on, so I’ve taken a few showers in complete darkness. As of last night we have no water, let’s hope that gets fixed soon #firstworldproblems. Other than that, life is going well! Our neighbours in our compound are extremely friendly, in fact, everyone I’ve met here is extremely friendly. Even strangers on the street will stop and say hello.

This morning, as Casey and I were leaving our room, there was little girl sitting on the concrete outside her room. Earlier this morning Casey and I heard her mother bathing her in a basin outside (remember, currently no running water). I enjoy entertaining children, but this little girl took one look at me and wanted nothing to do with me. She started screaming, and her mother looked at us and laughed. Apparently she feared me, as her mother put it.

I’ll have to take some pictures of our living area soon. I haven’t really been taking any pictures at all actually. Today Casey and I are going to check out the university. I’ll make sure to snap a few shots.

Well, I’m just finishing up eating my fresh banana and watermelon for breakfast. It’s only 10:30 but the sun is already mercilessly kicking are mzungu asses.
